33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Proverbs 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31. Happy are those who fear the Lord – Psalm 127(128):1-5. 1 Thessalonians 5:1-6. Matthew 25:14-30.

Gifts are to be used to help us grow

‘Do not be afraid’, Jesus tells his disciples.

Yet fear and anxiety often rule over us in our lives. Like the servant who received only one talent, we’re tempted to withdraw ourselves from the world in fear that if we take a risk – whether with a new job, new venture, new relationship, new creative project – we might lose what meagre gifts we already have.

But as the master in the parable knows, gifts are not meant to be hidden away, but to help us grow. If we don’t use our God-given gifts, we might as well have not received them at all. They will be lost to us just the same.

So today, let’s pray and discern which gifts we’ve been hiding away, and seek ways of using those gifts for the benefit of others in our lives
