A prophet is only despised in his own country
Sometimes our history with people gets in the way of understanding them.
People who’ve gone through significant loss, for example, might find it difficult to reconnect with people who haven’t seen the journey they’ve gone through. Those who’ve had a significant experience overseas might find it hard to get back into their old rhythms of life and relationships when they get home. For old friends and family, trying to acquaint ourselves with the ‘new’ version of that person can sometimes be difficult.
We might have some understanding, then, of the people of Nazareth. But this Gospel reading reminds us that when people we love come back to us after a time of change, it’s worth spending the time getting to know them again. Let’s consider today who we might reconnect with in our own lives.
