Solemnity of St. Mary of the Cross, August 8 A.D. 2021

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop

1 Kings 17:8-16. My soul clings to you; your right hand holds me fast – Ps 62(63):1-8. Colossians 3:12-17. Matthew 6:25-34.

Trust in God because God loves us more than we can possibly know

It is good that this Feast falls on a Sunday as it will get the exposure that it deserves. St Mary of the Cross is an Australian hero, and the readings celebrate that in important ways. The woman who gives food to Elijah trusted as St Mary did and gave everything in trust, even though it personally cost her a great deal. Psalm 62 is used for all major saints’ feasts and those of Mary as well. It speaks of the soul that longs and thirsts for God above all else. It is very apt that this is used for St Mary as well. Jesus tells us in the gospel not to worry about the ordinary things; what we wear, what we eat, where we live. Trust in God because God loves us more than we can possibly know.
